James Hutcheson is an experienced artist and designer based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
He specialises in design for the publishing and music industries - book design, cover and sleeve design (illustration, photography and typography), and finished art for print and other media.
Over the years he has worked on many projects with numerous authors, including Antonia Fraser (Scottish Love Poems), Alasdair Gray (Lanark) and Yan Martel (Life of Pi). He has designed and illustrated record sleeves for The Incredible String Band and Steve Winwood (amongst others). He won the Adobe ‘Assemble’ Design Award in 1996 for his contribution to the National Museum of Scotland’s bicentennial Robert Burns exhibition, ‘Pride and Passion’.
A visiting lecturer at Leeds University, Edinburgh College of Art, Dundee College of Art & Design and Napier University, James was Canongate Book’s Art Director before moving to Birlinn, where he was Creative Director. He is now running his own studio in Newhaven.
